Bonding with my baby
Published: 23 July 2010 09:07
Well, after my last slightly depressed missive, I cant say that my mojo has magically come back, I have however given myself a bit of a talking to. YES there are only 6 weeks left to do a lot of MAJOR things BUT that also means I have 6 weeks to chill out a bit for me and my familys sake! I’ve decided to take some time to bond with my first baby before the second arrives – starting with tonight with some wonderful girlie time at the ‘glorious greve de lecq’ event that Tourism put on – cute little market stalls, lovely food (Bea made impressive headway into a wild boar sausage and chips for dinner!) the sun setting and Beas first face painting experience – very very cute J
What probably gave me the appropriate kick up the back side was a little chat I had last night with someone I class as one of the most amazing women in the world... my Hypnobirthing tutor Jan Auffret.
I tried hypno birthing whilst I was pregnant with BB and although a little sceptical I loved the underlying messages that it is all about – trying to realise that your body is doing something natural, fight the fear we have developed ourselves surrounding labour and birth and above all (if Jan is teaching you) go into the whole experience with an open mind and you might just have the birth experience you hope for.
Needless to say, with BB I was 2 weeks overdue and had to be induced with the prostaglandin pessaries – once I was on the way though it was all very quick and I found it quite hard to get my head into the right place. With my husbands help (he really pulled it out of the bag on the night!) I did it and 6 hours later it was such a shame to have to have forceps to help BB’s final arrival BUT I had a pretty amazing experience – no it wasn’t all rose petals and calm music but it was an awful lot better than expected and in the labour room I declared ‘it wasn’t that bad, I could do it again’ so something obviously worked!
Jan came round to ‘remind’ us about the breathing techniques and scripts that we could practice together before and during the birth of this little wriggler. It was such a great reminder of how lucky we are to have BB and how exciting (as well as daunting) it is to be having another baby. Jan really is a caring, amazing woman who happens to be a senior midwife too so you get some good ante natal advice whilst she’s with you – if you have ANY fears about labour and fancy giving hypnobirthing a go, I think she is amazing.
My mojo is considering a come back!

Where did the mummy mojo go?

So – I’ve made it to 34 weeks with hardly anything to complain about – sure, the pelvis has been a bit dodgy this time around and sleep is starting to be a little more elusive than I would like it to be but if you ask me it I’ve been very lucky. My ankles haven’t swelled once whereas I spent a lot of time bare foot last time so that the midwives couldn’t see the strap marks left in my swollen tootsies! My blood pressure has been A OK which it wasn’t last time, despite builders being my main source of day time conversation now – all proof that no two pregnancies are ever the same I guess.
I have felt tip top and I think being a mummy leaves you with a certain level of tiredness that pregnancy merely tops up rather than feeling totally wiped out like many first time mums do. I recently lost an amazing old boss of mine to a sudden heart attack though and I think dealing with grief, hormones, a two year old AND builders in my loft has slightly tipped me over the edge and I’ve lost my mojo!
When talking to a friend of mine about this feeling, she simply exclaimed “good!” you’d be super woman if you weren’t feeling a bit rubbish by now and you do only have 7 weeks left of your pregnancy so you are allowed to be tired too! “Oh” I thought – I suppose you are right – isn’t it amazing how we need someone else to point out the blatantly obvious to us before we will listen so – despite the fact that there isn’t much slowing down that can be done with a 2 year old – I have promised myself that I will try. When BB is asleep, I will try to rest... I won’t try to do the weekly shop AND do a dash around the park or the zoo in one morning like I normally do; I want to enjoy my time alone with my gorgeous girl too
SO – if you know me and you see me racing around like a mad thing, tell me off, or even better, take me for a cup of tea!

Amazing mums!

Did you see Dragons Den on Wednesday night? If you didn’t you missed an amazing young mum – Kirsty Henshaw, win over two of the dragons to get the financial backing her company needs.
Kirsty Henshaw has the makings of a true entrepreneur. After being unable to find a frozen dessert suitable for her dairy intolerant toddler that wasn’t very high in sugar and fat, she set about inventing her own. Something we all simply dream of doing!
The health conscious 23-year-old found a recipe for success, combining brown rice milk, coconut oil, New Zealand Manuka Honey and Echinacea – all renowned for their health giving properties. With the help of Business Link Northwest Kirsty has launched her own company and found a manufacturer for Coconuka, and her vegan alternative, Coconice, which is sweetened with fruit rather than honey and comes in three flavours.
It is so inspirational to think of a young mum searching for some goodness for her son and instead of squirreling the secret recipe away to herself not only did she share it, she is making a living from the results – mums are an amazing and determined bunch really aren’t they!
Of course, we’d love to see her products being stocked over here.... I wonder where how we get the supermarkets or health food shops to buy some in for us to try?
